Bagiku merupakan saat mengharukan, bahwa saya berdiri lagi di mimbar Universitas ini dan sekali lagi boleh memberikan kuliah. Dalam pada itu pikiranku kembali ke tahun-tahun, ketika saya menerima tugas sebagai guru akademis di Universitas Bonn setelah suatu kurun waktu indah di Sekolah Tinggi Freising. Waktu itu ? 1959 ? masih jaman tata Universitas lama. Untuk setiap mata kuliah tidak ada asisten atau sekretaris: tetapi untungnya malah ada perjumpaan yang amat langsung dengan mahasiswa dan terutama juga antara para Profesor satu sama lain. Di ruang dosen kami dapat ketemu sebelum atau sesudah kuliah. Kontak antara ahli sejarah, filsuf, filolog dan tentu saja juga antara para teolog dari kedua fakultas teologi (Protestan dan Katolik) sangat akrab. (more…)

Distinguished Ladies and Gentlemen,
It is a moving experience for me to be back again in the university and to be able once
again to give a lecture at this podium. I think back to those years when, after a
pleasant period at the Freisinger Hochschule, I began teaching at the University of
Bonn. That was in 1959, in the days of the old university made up of ordinary
professors. The various chairs had neither assistants nor secretaries, but in
recompense there was much direct contact with students and in particular among the
professors themselves. We would meet before and after lessons in the rooms of the

Perhaps his erudite mind does not quite yet grasp how to transform his beloved scholarly explorations into effective papal politics. But two months before a scheduled trip to Turkey, his first to a predominantly Muslim country, Pope Benedict XVI raised a ruckus with a provocative lecture on the relationship between faith, reason and violence on a visit to Regensburg University, where he once taught theology. As a good professor might, he quoted a 14th century Byzantine Emperor. The new al-Qaida field commander in Afghanistan is calling for Muslims to leave the U.S. – particularly Washington and New York – in anticipation of a major terror attack to rival Sept. 11, according to an interview by a Pakistani journalist.
Abu Dawood told Hamid Mir, a reporter who has covered al-Qaida and met with Osama bin Laden, the attack is being coordinated by Adnan el-Shukrijumah and suggests it may involve some form of weapon of mass destruction smuggled across the Mexican border.
“Our brothers are ready to attack inside America. We will breach their security again,” he is quoted as saying. “There is no timeframe for our attack inside America; we can do it any time.”
